Marie Karner is an early career researcher at the Institute of Geography at the JGU Mainz in Germany. Currently, she is involved in a research project on Communities of Syrians in Germany founded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). For her dissertation, she studied different Lebanese diasporic communities and their practices of reproduction and community building within a multi-sited-research design. In 2017, she received a one-year doctoral fellowship from the Orient-Institut Beirut. Apart from topics related to migration, diaspora and urban geography (i.e. historic urban quarters, nightscapes), her research interests include tourism geography (i.e. cruise tourism, film induced tourism) as well as methodological and analytical dimensions of atmosphere. She holds a diploma in Geography with a thesis on the transformation of the historic center of Byblos/Jbeil in Lebanon, which received a special mention within the Otto-Borst-Prize 2015.
