I am the Principal Investigator of the Junior Research Group 'Jihadism on the Internet: Images and Videos, their Appropriation, and Dissemination' at the Department of Social Anthropology and African Studies / University of Mainz (Germany). My research and teaching evolve around questions of social change and the role of religio-political actors therein. I am particularly interested in the concepts and strategies employed by modern and contemporary social, political, and religious movements in the MENA region in order to make plausible and powerful propositions towards their audiences. My Research Group brings together six young researchers from Islamic Studies, Film and Media Studies, and Social Anthropology who jointly analyze visual communicative propositions of Jihadi movements and explore the way in which media users interact with them.
